DESCRIPTION:Carl Stone returns to the Bay Area for a solo electronic music concert\, followed by a special collaborative set with Paul Dresher. \n\n\n\n\nCarl Stone\, one of the pioneers of live computer music\, returns to the Bay Area for an intimate performance of solo electronic music. The Village Voice has hailed Carl as “the king of sampling” and “one of the best composers living in (the USA) today.” He has used computers in live performance since 1986. Stone was born in Los Angeles and now divides his time between Los Angeles and Japan. He studied composition at the California Institute of the Arts with Morton Subotnick and James Tenney and has composed electro-acoustic music almost exclusively since 1972. He is a faculty member in the Department of Media Engineering at Chukyo University in Japan. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing his solo set\, Stone will reunite with long-time friend Paul Dresher for a duo improvisation\, continuing a creative dialogue first explored at the Other Minds Festival and again in our studio two years ago—moving from their distinct sonic worlds into a shared\, richly layered electro-acoustic landscape. Dresher\, who will perform on the Hurdy Grande [invented and built by Dresher and Daniel Schmidt]\, is a composer\, performer\, and inventor whose work blends acoustic and electronic sound in inventive and expressive ways. He is the founder of the Paul Dresher Ensemble and has collaborated with a wide range of artists across disciplines\, creating music for concerts\, opera\, theater\, dance\, and film.

DESCRIPTION:Experience a piano concert brought to life by interactive visuals and a live VR performance. \nJoin us for a totally unique Virtual Reality and interactive audio/video performance featuring work by Jarosław Kapuściński\, Associate Professor of Music at Stanford University\, whose work focuses on intermedia composition\, performance\, and Japanese traditional aesthetics. \nThe evening comprises two parts. The first half features two piano-and-video works by Jaroslaw Kapuściński. The piano performance by new music specialist Keisuke Nakagoshi is carefully tracked by a computer that responds with large-scale video projections that follow the score. \nPROGRAM \nFirst Part \n“Juicy”(2009\, piano and interactive projection\, 10 min). \nFruits and music—an unexpected pairing? Both burst with color and form\, both awaken the senses in immediate and powerful ways. In this intermedia performance\, sight and sound intertwine to reveal their surprising connection. \n“Side Effects”(2017\, piano and visual projection\, 17 min). \nSide Effects started as a photographic project by Kacper Kowalski\, exploring the complex relationship between humanity and nature as seen from a perspective 150 meters above the ground. This estranged perspective on some of the most common spaces revealed fresh metaphoric and structural dimensions that inspired Kapuściński to propose an intermedia collaboration. What if specially composed music performed live in concert interpreted the images and guided the viewers through a rich world of sometimes unexpected emotions\, meanings\, and abstract visual forms? The ten movements refer in different ways to the four seasons and the material categories of air\, wood\, water\, fire\, and earth. \n“Point Line Piano”(2024) is a VR project that reimagines piano music by fusing its modes of composing\, playing\, and listening. As you interact with it\, your ears\, eyes\, and hands act together. You start by drawing lines freely in the space around you\, sparking musical notes that are notched as points on the lines as you draw them. These notes quickly accumulate\, forming distinct melodic phrases and rhythms\, while the computer generates an intricate audiovisual dance all around you. The work enables a spatial and full-body experience of abstraction not found in any other medium. In a live concert setting it can also be used as an audiovisual instrument. \nSecond Part \nKapuściński dons a VR headset and\, while holding two handsets\, draws in virtual space (which we see on the full wall projection). The drawing is also tracked and triggers a potential piano score that responds directly to the drawing process. After becoming an architect and having worked in the profession for four years\, he eventually decided to commit to flying and photography. As a paraglider\, a pilot of small aircraft\, and a gyrocopter\, Kacper spent over 5000 hours in the air. The flight is for Kowalski not only a way to capture the world beneath\, but becomes a spiritual journey that reveals universal truths about the relationship between man and nature\, about the past and the present\, and about one’s own personal truth and the way to get there. He has received numerous awards\, including the World Press Photo award (three times)\, the Picture of the Year International POYi award (six times)\, and dozens of others. His first book\, Side Effects\, was published in 2014\, OVER was self-published in 2017\, followed by Arché in 2021\, and Event Horizon in 2022 (1605 Publishers). His works have been exhibited in group and solo exhibitions internationally\, and the books have won prizes and been nominated\, including at Les Prix du Livre at Rencontres d’Arles. The project Event Horizon was on display at the SFO Museum in San Francisco in 2023. \nMarc Downie and Paul Kaiser have collaborated as OpenEndedGroup since 2001. It premiered in 2024 at ZKM | Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe\, Germany (the leading authority in digital and contemporary art that is deeply influential within the art world.) \nLet the Bay Area premiere of this VR installation seduce you into an immersive visual and sonic universe in which you “paint” simultaneously in images and sound.  \nImmerse yourself in Point Line Piano and interact with others and the interactive artwork not only with your ears\, but also with your eyes and hands. By running your hand over the drawn lines\, you can trigger notes and write them down. Complex visual geometries are created simultaneously. \nIn Point Line Piano\, the controller in each hand becomes a virtual paintbrush with which you create your 3D visual and musical notations; at the same time\, it represents the virtual lens through which you view and transform these notations. Depending on the scene you select (there are over a dozen to choose from)\, you can zoom in and out of the 3D images. moving your “musical notation” through the visual space that transforms and modulates the sound. \nStep by step\, you will become familiar with a strange new environment of spatial images\, with their echoes of calligraphy\, musical notation\, architectural\, and scientific diagrams. SUMMARY:Moe Staiano Conducts Music for 48 Guitars(24 Guitar Version)
DESCRIPTION:Moe Staiano conducts his electric guitar ensemble in the premiere of his second guitar composition\, Music for 48 Guitars (24guitar version). \n\n\n\n\nMoe Staiano conducts his electric guitar ensemble with the premiere of Music for 48 Guitars (24 guitar version). This is an exploration of tonal interplay and contrasting rhythms with eight electric guitars\, bass\, drums\, and percussion. It features assertive rhythmic structures and intertwining tremolo structures\, balanced by continuous play against each guitarist with bouncing rhythms and ongoing hockets while surrounding the audience with a bombastic attack. \nWritten at the start of 2022 and completed in 2023\, Music for 48 Guitars follows his first guitar composition\, Away Towards the Light (2016)\, but with a vision of encompassing the audience of the ensemble with various stations of players circling the audience with a live surround sound of music sections traveling back and forth. There are six (6) groupings of eight (8) guitar players each (four (4) each in this case for this performance)\, spread out equally in the room\, with five percussionists playing toms\, cymbals\, bongos\, brake drums\, and tam-tam\, and one drummer and bassist. The lack of venues with the space and accommodation to house a hefty ensemble of 55 players has (and continues to) delay any performance. The truncated ensemble of 31 players will be the first performance of any kind at the Dresher Ensemble Studio. The performance will conclude my 2019 Dresher Ensemble Artist Residency that was interrupted due to COVID.

These world-class artists have performed on some of the greatest stages in India and abroad\, and now they bring their mastery to the intimate setting of our West Oakland studio. Up close\, you’ll feel the power of the drums\, hear every nuance of the singers\, and see the fine details of costume and makeup in rare close-up. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness Kathakali at its highest level. \nKalyana Sougandhikam was written by Kottayath Thamburan based on events in the Mahābhārata during the Pandavas’ vanavasa ( exile in the forest ) at Kamyaka Forest. While staying near the Gandhamadana Mountains\, Draupadi sees a rare Sougandhika flower and asks Bhima to find more. Determined to fulfill her wish\, Bhima sets out through the forest\, using his great strength to push through obstacles until he reaches the Kadali forest. There\, his loud journey disturbs Hanuman\, who is meditating. Realizing it’s his younger brother\, Hanuman decides to teach Bhima a lesson in humility by posing as a weak old monkey blocking the path. Bhima\, unable to move the monkey’s tail\, realizes the truth. Bali\, recognizing Ravana as his father\, Indra’s vanquisher\, decides to teach him a lesson. When Ravana tries to capture him\, he ends up entangled in Bali’s tail\, much to Narada’s amusement. This story is based on Mahābhārata. The story of Subhadra Haranam is a chain of events that leads to Arjuna’s marriage with Subhadra (Krishna’s Younger sister). Arjuna broke a vow and went on a year-long pilgrimage\, during which he fell in love with Krishna’s sister\, Subhadra. Disguised as a saint\, he stayed at Dwaraka. With Krishna’s help\, he eloped with Subhadra while Balarama was away\, knowing Balarama wouldn’t approve the marriage. \nAfter his return\, Balarama learns that Arjuna\, disguised as a saint\, abducted Subhadra with Krishna’s support. Furious\, he confronts Krishna and threatens to kill Arjuna. Krishna tries to calm him with logic and finally reminds him that killing Arjuna would make Subhadra a widow. Realizing this\, Balarama agrees to visit the couple. On the way\, Krishna shows him Arjuna’s battlefield skills\, which impress Balarama. SUMMARY:Up Close with Rinde EckertVoice\, Words\, Music and Friends
DESCRIPTION:Rinde Eckert—recipient of the 2005 Marc Blitzstein Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters—is a singer\, writer\, composer\, actor\, mover\, and musician: in short\, a performing artist extraordinaire. His program features both new and classic solo works that highlight his remarkable voice\, masterful writing\, and wide-ranging instrumental artistry on an array of unconventional instruments. To close out the program\, he’ll be joined by longtime collaborators Paul Dresher and Joel Davel\, who will perform on their own invented instruments\, the Hurdy Grande and Marimba Lumina.\n\n \n\nPaul asked Rinde about this upcoming 90-minute performance in our studio.\n“I’m planning on playing some old favorites and some new ones\, as well as a couple of experiments with new friends. I’ve started most concerts (including my Kennedy Center concert) with a lament sung with an accordion. I won’t break the tradition this time. Prayer is another favorite\, built on a piece I wrote for The Gardening of Thomas D.\, which is for piano. I’m bringing my 10-string slide guitar so that The Idiot Variations will be represented. From my last CD\, The Natural World\, I’ll sing Catbird (piano) and Black is the Color (accordion). Ellen made me promise to sing One Night On eave from Highway Ulysses and Time is Not a Simple Thing from The Raft (the piece that Covid killed).”\n\n

DESCRIPTION:In the perfect environment for close listening\, the two cellos and saxophone TRIO BEN DAVIS – FRED LONBERG-HOLM – LARRY OCHS invite you\, the avid listeners\, to join the musicians in enjoying their spontaneous but carefully sculpted music as it happens\, in real time. Through repeated performances\, musical discussions after shows and rehearsals\, this music slowly but confidently evolves. And the audience and the performance environment matter. There’s no more perfect environment than Paul Dresher’s studio space in which to hear the intimate improvisations that this trio hopes to deliver. \n  \nERIC THEISE presents a set of performances\, solo and in collaboration with ABIGAIL HINSON (movement) and local musicians. The concert involves an invented\, map-driven sound maker; dance improvisations over a map animation project onto the floor; and improvised cartography projected onto the back wall that responding to music and dance. Theise’s work was recently seen atop San Francisco’s Salesforce Tower Top.

DESCRIPTION:ERNST KAREL: ATMOSPHERIC RIVERS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nERNST KAREL presents his multichannel\, ongoing iterative work\, Atmospheric Rivers. This piece’s subject is a key component of the global water cycle: the enormous streams of concentrated water vapor which flow through the sky from the tropics towards the poles\, releasing heavy rain in high wind\, particularly in the western U.S\, and anticipated to increase in frequency and intensity with climate change. Performed in surround sound\, the piece consists of unprocessed stereo and multichannel location recordings of atmospheric rivers\, made over the past few years\, as they pass by our house at the rocky northern California coast. \nTHE GLITCH BLOOM + SADA\nTHE GLITCH BLOOM (EDA ER & DANNIEL RIBEIRO) operates in an indefinable musical territory where the lines between composed work\, improvisation\, and multimedia blur into a distinctive sonic fusion. Their artistic practice combines vocals\, electronic elements\, electric guitar\, and video with transducers\, unconventional playing techniques\, and sculptural objects\, establishing a fluid relationship between planned structure and spontaneous creation. Founded on mutual investigation of sound possibilities\, collaborative processes\, and multimedia integration\, Glitch Bloom embraces unexpected outcomes—where harsh sounds intermingle with melodic elements\, acoustic manipulations transform through electronic processing\, and sound manifests as both physical and transient. Their performances create immersive environments that explore the convergence of music\, physical movement\, and visual components to deliver an experience that defies traditional classification. \nSADA is a vocal duo between SARAH GRACE GRAVES and EDA ER\, both singers and composers who each stumbled upon experimental music somewhat unexpectedly: Graves began her artistic path as a choral singer\, Er as an actor. In combining Graves’ innocent virtuosity with Er’s disarming honesty\, the two hope to build a narrative\, aesthetic\, and technical habitat for stories only they can tell.

Mezzacappa’s previous works have drawn inspiration from Dashiell Hammett and Paul Auster’s lean noir crime novels and Italo Calvino’s hilarious and poignant Cosmicomics stories. Now she’s exploring the concept of worldbuilding in the otherwrldly cycle\, a suite of music inspired her fascination with the speculative fiction of Ursula Le Guin\, Haruki Murakami\, Samuel R. Rogers—a mentee of saxophone legends Gary Bartz\, Justin Robinson\, and Dann Zinn—has performed at venues across the nation\, including Dizzy’s Club\, SFJAZZ\, LIBRETTO\, the Concord Jazz Festival\, the Vail Jazz Party\, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Drawing inspiration from a diverse array of genres\, Rogers’s playing and composing styles blend elements of traditional\, modern\, and avant-garde jazz\, while also embracing influences from popular\, experimental\, and singer-songwriter music. For WEST OAKLAND SOUND SERIES\, Rogers joins LORIN BENEDICT\, an improvising vocalist (scat singer\, essentially) living in Emeryville\, California. Most of Lorin’s work in this area is centered loosely in the jazz idiom. Lorin has co-led small groups (duos\, trios) in which the roles of the musicians are somewhat mutable even in contexts where highly structured forms are being played. Examples include Bleeding Vector with Emeryville guitarist Eric Vogler\, and another duo project with east bay saxophonist Kasey Knudsen. Together\, these three musicians jointly lead the trio project\, The Holly Martins. He has also co-led duo projects with Helsinki-based drummer Sam Ospovat and LA-based musician Logan Kane.

DESCRIPTION:This evening’s performances will showcase two forms of dance within the Odissi repertoire — Nritta or pure dance\, usually a lyrical composition celebrating a season or a mood\, and Nritya or expressive dance where the dancers use movement and expression to narrate a story\, usually from Hindu mythology.\n\nThe dancers will perform a mix of Guru Swain’s unique choreographies\, which honor the Odissi form and traditions but offer fresh executions of this exquisite and ancient Indian classical dance form\, as well as traditional items from the Odissi repertoire.\n\nSamir Kumar Panigrahi\, Santosh Ram\, Roji Swain\, and Debashree Patnaik are award-winning principal dancers with the Bhubaneswar-based disciples of Guru Shree Bichitrananda Swain\, founder-director of Rudrakshya Foundation. Popular interest in culturally rich South and Southeast Asian art performance emerged in the 1960s through early 1970s through awareness of Southeast Asia\, catapulted by concerns for the Vietnamese War. The interest in Indian culture and traditional arts manifested in pop culture in music\, decorative arts\, practice of meditation and yoga\, dance and theater. \n\n11:00 AM – 5:00 PM \nFree Performances and Workshops \nFree Performances celebrating the 50-year history of Indonesian and Indian art performance in the Bay Area and learn more about the 4th and 1st largest countries in the world. Enjoy the UCB-based Sari Raras courtly gamelan bronze percussion ensemble\, followed by a lively set of West Javanese music & dance. Participate in one of the family-friendly mask and puppetry workshops while learning about the Hindu mythology shared over the centuries by India and Indonesia.
