DESCRIPTION:The Glissando Flute is a normal orchestral flute with Robert Dick’s invention\, the “Glissando Headjoint®” (inspired by the electric guitar’s “whammy bar”)\, making the flute more flexible and liquid. Long-time sfSound flutist DIANE GRUBBE has asked six Bay Area composers to let their creative energy go wild with the possibilities of the instrument and her arsenal of extended flute techniques. These renowned Bay Area composer/improvisers are STEVE ADAMS\, KYLE BRUCKMANN\, MATT INGALLS\, BRENT MILLER\, WENDY REID and MONICA SCOTT. A group improv with Diane and all the composers will follow the premieres. \nComposer/performer MARGUERITE BROWN\, presents tuning to\, a solo performance exploring the electric guitar as a celestial body using a curated set of planetary tuning forks\, hardware\, and unconventional performance techniques. The project seeks to explore the intersection of vibration\, resonance\, and cosmic frequencies as a means of expanding the electric guitar’s sonic and conceptual possibilities.

SUMMARY:King Lear : The Dramaturg’s Lens with Dr. Philippa Kelly
DESCRIPTION:Want to explore King Lear more deeply before experiencing it onstage? Join Oakland Theater Project Resident Dramaturg Dr. Philippa Kelly for The Dramaturg’s Lens\, a four-week course examining Shakespeare’s great tragedy\, its enduring and highly contemporary themes\, and the role of music in the upcoming production. \nThe course includes conversations with composer Paul Dresher\, who is composing an original score for the production and playing live with Joel Davel [September 28] ; and actors J Jha\, Rinde Eckert and Dean Linnard. Classes begin September 14 with an in-person gathering (repeated on zoom the next day for those who can’t make the gathering). Thereafter the course runs Mondays 4 pm online. It is suitable for all ages and levels of theatrical knowledge. \nDr. Philippa Kelly was the first woman in history to be commissioned to produce a public edition of King Lear (Halstead Press\, 2002). She has also written King Lear: A Guide (Oxford University Press) and The King and I (Bloomsbury Press)\, a contemporary exploration of King Lear. Philippa grew up in Australia\, and came to dramaturgy by way of academe\, where she’s held fellowships from many foundations including the Fulbright\, Rockerfeller\, and Walter and Eliza Hall Foundations\, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Australian Research Council\, and the Humanities Research Centre. She has published over thirty peer-reviewed articles (many of them on King Lear) and eleven books with international presses. Philippa is Resident Dramaturg at the Oakland Theater Project and co-lead dramaturg at Marin Shakespeare Company\, and has served as production dramaturg at many other theaters including the Oregon Shakespeare Festival\, the San Francisco Playhouse\, the Berkeley Repertory Theater\, the Magic Theatre\, and Shotgun Company Players. She held a long-term appointment as Resident Dramaturg with the California Shakespeare Theater before its closure in 2024. Philippa brings her deep love of research to her dozens of theatre playbill pieces\, aiming\, in each\, to give audiences something to add to their conversations as they walk away from a play. Her theater leadership in American colleges and middle and high schools has been supported by the California Arts Council and the Walter and Elise Haas Foundation. DESCRIPTION:The Geryon Trio performs Random Ruminations. Drawing on themes of absurdity\, chance\, and fluidity\, JOHANNA POETHIG’S text\, image\, and oracle project intersects with an aleatoric performance by CHRIS BROWN and RAFFI GARABEDIAN to form a collaborative exploration of chance\, divination\, and spontaneous creation. Prompted by Lyn Hejinian’s inquiry into constructive absurdity\, Poethig weaves together texts\, images\, and casting cards that probe human attempts to forecast the future through magic\, gambling\, and mechanized search tools. Her work merges with Brown’s electronic composition “Geryon”—a three-headed musical model that uses software to randomly sample\, process\, and redistribute the musicians’ live acoustic improvisations back through three speakers. Featuring Brown’s interactive electronic instrumentation alongside Garabedian’s dedicated tenor saxophone improvisation\, the joint project creates a resonant\, chaotic feedback loop blending history\, prediction\, and musical multiplicity. \nDANA REASON (piano). PHILIP GELB (shakuhachi/electronics)\, and KYLE BRUCKMANN (oboe/electronics) premiere a new trio uniting three veterans of the international improvised music scene. Dana Reason and Philip Gelb bring decades of shared synergy to the stage\, drawing on a rich collaborative history rooted in their celebrated trio with avant-garde pioneer and mentor Pauline Oliveros. They are joined by master double-reedist Kyle Bruckmann\, a frequent collaborator whose distinct sonic voice completes this powerful new ensemble.

DESCRIPTION:Domi\, Kaitlin McSweeney\, and K. Francis Messer are an experimental trio blending electro-acoustic composition and improvisation with prepared drums\, scrap metal\, cello\, movement\, voice\, amplifiers\, and salvaged resonant objects. Out of a receptive summoning\, distinct voices emerge and impress upon each other\, moving with and in contrast\, interpenetrating and gravitating toward a common orbit of evolving conditions. The trio welcomes sonic feedback as a fourth collaborator\, with elements of ritualistic repetition and deep listening. \nFor over a decade\, the duo of Ken Ueno (vocals) and Matt Ingalls (clarinet) has presented its unique arsenal of extended techniques\, creating an experience that defies classical expectations of the sounds that can be made with voice and clarinet. Composer\, vocalist\, and sound artist Ueno is a recipient of the Rome Prize and the Berlin Prize and is currently a professor at UC Berkeley. He sings overtones\, multiband multiphonics\, and subtones\, and employs throat singing. Oakland-based Ingalls’ clarinet techniques include circular breathing\, multiphonics\, various breath effects\, and a unique hybrid-timbre polyphonic effect.

DESCRIPTION:Oakland musicians Nathan Clevenger\, Jordan Glenn\, and Cory Wright share a long and entwined history of collaboration across various projects\, including Wiener Kids\, Ashen Cleric\, and Fellow Hominids. Formed in 2021\, the trio has released 3 albums and initiated a series of collaborations with guest artists\, including Kasey Knudsen\, Crystal Pascucci\, Phillip Greenlief\, Marié Abe\, and Safa Shokrai. Working from\, between\, and against Clevenger’s compositional frames and utilizing the multi-instrumental flexibility of each player\, the trio (and guests) weaves between non-idiomatic improvisation and often gnomic composed material\, with a focus on spaciousness and timbral detail. For tonight’s performance\, the trio is joined by vocalist Danishta Rivero and trumpeter Ari Brown. \nFornax Linteum is a free-improvisation trio consisting of Andrew Joron (theremin)\, Joseph Dee Bradshaw (guitar)\, and Janel Wagner (voice). Andrew Joron is a theremin player who has performed in a variety of experimental and jazz ensembles\, including the duo Fornax Linteum\, the free-improvisation quartet Ouroborous\, and Evidence Trio. Joseph Dee Bradshaw is a guitarist and improviser based in Oakland. Janel Wagner is a classically trained vocalist and a multi-instrumentalist rooted in jazz and folk traditions.

Drawing from each musician’s extensive background in free improvisation and experimentalism\, the evening unfolds as an unpredictable multilogue. \nAine Nakamura presents a collaborative performance of voice and body with local clarinetist and computer musician Matt Ingalls. Aine Nakamura often writes words and considers shapes as if her throat is a membrane and each body part is a shape—a phenomenon among worldly phenomena\, in relation. Through collaborations\, she develops her approach to attunement\, spaces\, and listening.

Since their 2013 founding\, they have premiered dozens of works written for them\, conducted academic residencies across the country\, and appeared at festivals including Long Play\, Time:Spans (NYC)\, FeNAM (Sacramento)\, Taproot (UC Davis)\, and Music Current (Dublin\, Ireland).\n\n \nThis program will consist entirely of works they’ve never performed in the Bay Area before.

DESCRIPTION:The Northwest Experimental Guitar Orchestra is a Seattle-based ensemble of musicians from diverse performance backgrounds. They perform new works that explore alternative methods of scoring\, conducting\, and technology integration. By favoring approaches that avoid traditional Western music notation\, they make participation accessible to everyone\, regardless of background\, training\, or education. They will perform a suite of three compositions inspired by particle physics. All movements are presented without a live conductor\, each using a different form of audio or visual technological guidance. \nLorin Benedict is a California-based improvising vocalist—essentially\, a scat singer—who works in jazz and jazz-adjacent music. He specializes in small-group improvisations—solo\, duo\, and trio—in which structured forms are approached in a distinctly loose and playful way. \nCasey Tessier is a professional tap dance artist and award-winning percussionist from Albuquerque\, New Mexico. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area\, she has devoted her life to honoring\, sharing\, and advancing percussive dance as an instrumental medium for representation\, communication\, and inspiration.

DESCRIPTION:FF (Fuck Fascists) is the collaboration of SHARKIFACE and AVA KOOHBOR\, who met at Mills College. They use electronics\, noise\, and spoken word to enact resistance and reject fascism and patriarchy. They make sound as protest\, performance as refusal\, and noise as a space for collective action. SHARKIFACE\, aka Angela Edwards\, is an Oakland-based performer blending synths\, custom instruments\, and voice to craft visceral\, noise-influenced electronic works. San Francisco based poet\, visual and sound artist AVA KOOHBOR works with sound as a tactile material. The piece lives in the coexistence of extremes and between shifting thresholds. Its sound world is built from synthesized and sampled Iranian instruments\, field recordings\, processed material from previous works\, and transformed vocal sounds. It comes from sorrow\, anger\, and grief\, but also from hope\, love\, and resilience. Sonically and narratively\, the piece moves between edge and immersion\, water and space\, noise and delicacy\, flow and rigidity.\n\n \n\nSanta Cruz based composer\, CHRIS EVERINGHAM presents Searching\, a work that uses a just intonation sound space synthesized in MAX/MSP. The performer “searches” for JI harmonies within the sound space. Throughout Searching\, the fundamental pitch of the harmonies slowly descends\, creating new resonances with each change. In this piece Everingham seeks to combine his interests in just intonation with influences from the music of Morton Feldman\, the drone-metal band Sunn O)))\, and controlled improvisation. Searching is an evolving piece of music that changes with each new performance.

As they begin an exciting new chapter of advanced study and national recognition\, we are delighted to be part of their musical journey. Based in four different cities\, these remarkable young musicians are counting on your generosity to give them the opportunity to travel for their rehearsals and performances\, and to participate in the competitions essential to the development of a professional string quartet. \nFounded in 2022 at the Eastman School of Music\, the award-winning Maple Quartet is defined by their unified passion for community engagement through music – in public performances and presentations at diverse venues. \nWhile studying together at Eastman\, members Isabel Chen\, Magali Pelletey\, John Crowley\, and Gabriel Hennebury were two-time recipients of the Celentano String Quartet Award\, an honor recognizing an undergraduate string quartet of outstanding ability. This award supported their entries to national chamber music competitions including the 2025 Frances Walton Competition\, where they were awarded 2nd prize. They also received an honorable mention at the 2025 Saint Paul String Quartet Competition\, and were finalists at the 2025 Coltman Chamber Music Competition. \nThe Quartet’s primary mentors have included members of the Ying and Verona Quartets\, as well as professors Mimi Hwang\, David Bowlin\, and Masumi Per Rostad. They have also been incredibly fortunate to receive instruction from esteemed artists\, including members of the Takács and Calidore Quartets\, Misha Amory\, Peter Salaff\, Peter Winograd\, Mathieu Herzog\, Amit Even-Tov\, and Catherine Cosbey. Their notable collaborations have included performances with Robin Scott\, Chiao-Wen Cheng\, Jonathan Swartz\, and Wendy Chen. \nSUMMER 2026 \nThe Maple Quartet is spending the summer in California before returning to their graduate studies: Isabel at the New England Conservatory\, Magali at Rice University\, Shepherd School of Music\, John at the Juilliard School\, and Gabriel at the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre & Dance. \nAs the 2026 Emerging Artist String Quartet at Music Academy of the West\, they will spend four weeks in residence in Santa Barbara\, coached exclusively by the Takács Quartet.  Together they will perform the Mendelssohn Octet in E-flat Major\, Op. 20 with the Takács on July 2\, 2026\, in founding cellist Andras Fejér’s final concert with the Takács! Later in the summer\, they head north to Napa\, where they are the 2026 Fellowship String Quartet at Music in the Vineyards.   \nMusic in the Vineyards: Tuesday\, August 4th\, 2026 @7:00 pm:  The Maple Quartet and host Michael Adams will illustrate the importance of folk sources in the world of classical music. DESCRIPTION:Join Us for a special evening of music performed by the Dresher Davel Invented Instrument Duo in support of the Dresher Ensemble Artist Residency (DEAR).\nKnown for their extraordinary\, hand-built instruments—including the Quadrachord and Hurdy Grande—the duo creates immersive\, visually striking performances unlike anything you’ve seen or heard before. \nThis one-night-only event directly supports DEAR\, a program that gives artists the time\, space\, and resources to bring bold new work to life. \nEach year\, DEAR supports six artists with a four-week residency that includes 24/7 access to our studio\, professional production technologies\, and dedicated mentorship. The full cost of each residency to our organization is approximately $10\,000. \nA key part of that support is a $1\,500 production stipend per artist—funding that often makes the difference between an idea and a realized performance. \nThis year\, we are working to raise $9\,000 to cover the total stipend support for all six residents. \nFor many years\, the National Endowment for the Arts helped make this support possible. However\, for the second year in a row\, our application was not selected. At the core of DEAR is a simple commitment: to serve the full breadth of our Bay Area community. The music is written to accommodate improvisations utilizing various constraints\, miniature compositions within compositions\, fragments of songs from Eastern Europe and Northern El Cerrito. The band includes bagpipes virtuoso MATTHEW WELCH (also accordion and Balinese suling)\, clarinet/saxophone/flutist CORY WRIGHT (also trombone)\, guitarist TOMEK SINCLAIR\, and MIC GENDREAU on turntables\, electronics and percussion (and perhaps clarinet). Mantra sings and speaks\, Dan plays reeds\, brass\, melodica\, and bits of cheap percussion. And KATTT ATCHLEY provides a backdrop of projected tableaux of dolls among art: in movement along with their lighting on a system of turntables and lazy susans. PLONSEY SCHEME is eery\, majestic\, lost\, mysterious\, ceremonial\, and more/less than just there.

DESCRIPTION:MICHAEL J. SCHUMACHER (New York) presents various “immersive/dispersive” fixed media works\, composed for his portable 8 channel system and adapted for Dresher Studio’s  multi-channel Meyer sound system. Utilizing a radically inclusive palette of sounds\, the pieces wrap the audience in webs of potential associations\, making listening as vital to the creation of meaning as the act of composing itself. \nTrombonist/Composer/Improviser MARC PEREZ (Santa Cruz) and bassist JEFF SCHWARTZ (Santa Monica) present a set of duo improvisations. \nMarc Perez is a west coast based transdisciplinary creator/artist\, curator and organization leader whose work is concerned with freedom of agency\, access\, & improvisation. As a performer\, marc has performed and collaborated with a wide array of improvisers across the US\, including Devin Daniels\, Andrew Weathers\, Vinny Golia\, William Roper\, Matt Crane\, Dan Clucas\, Lucy Liu\, The Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra\, You\, Me & The Whales\, Angel Lin & Corey Fogel. \nJeff Schwartz is very active in Los Angeles’ improvised and experimental music communities. He has performed with artists including Anthony Braxton\, Glenn Branca\, Dana Reason\, Nicole Mitchell\, Elliott Levin\, and Adam Rudolph and attended the Creative Music Studio and the Vancouver Creative Music Institute. As principal bass of MESTO\,  he has toured the Middle East playing Arabic music\, and he works with classical groups including the Santa Monica Symphony\, the Vicente Chamber Orchestra\, and the Culver City Chamber Orchestra.

DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the ninetieth birthday year of Terry Riley\, Sarah Cahill performs some of his remarkable music. \nThe program will include Keyboard Studies\, Be Kind to One Another\, The Walrus in Memoriam\,Fandango on the Heaven Ladder\, and The Great Beauty\, along with Circle Songs by Danny Clay and Shade Studies by Sam Adams\, both composed in honor of Terry Riley’s eightieth birthday in 2015. \nSarah Cahill’s concert is the debut of our new “88+” concert series\, focusing on 20th- and 21st-century piano repertoire and world premieres\, and is supported by the Amphion Foundation and individual donors. Next on the series is Clara Yang [Saturday\, May 16]. \nSarah Cahill\, hailed as “a sterling pianist and an intrepid illuminator of the classical avant-garde” by The New York Times\, has commissioned and premiered over seventy compositions for solo piano. She has recently performed at the Metropolitan Museum\, at the Detroit Institute of Arts\, and an NPR Tiny Desk Concert. She has worked with Terry Riley for more than thirty years and has recorded his music\, with Regina Myers\, on a boxed set of albums titled “Eighty Trips Around the Sun.” \nCahill’s latest project is The Future is Female\, an investigation and reframing of the piano literature featuring more than seventy compositions by women around the globe\, from the Baroque to the present day\, including new commissioned works. Recent and upcoming performances of The Future is Female include concerts at The Barbican\, Metropolitan Museum\, Carolina Performing Arts\, National Gallery of Art\, Carlsbad Music Festival\, Detroit Institute of Arts\, University of Iowa\, Bowling Green New Music Festival\, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive\, North Dakota Museum of Art\, Mayville State University\, the EXTENSITY Concert Series’ Women Now Festival in New York\, and the Newport Classical Music Festival. Cahill also performed music from The Future is Female for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert series. \nSarah Cahill’s discography includes more than twenty albums on the New Albion\, CRI\, New World\, Tzadik\, Albany\, Innova\, Cold Blue\, Other Minds\, Irritable Hedgehog\, and Pinna labels. Her three-album series\, The Future is Female\, was released on First Hand Records between March 2022 and April 2023. These albums encompass 30 compositions by women from around the globe\, spanning the 17th century to the present day\, and include many world-premiere recordings. \nCahill’s radio show\, Revolutions Per Minute\, can be heard every Sunday evening from 6 to 8 pm on KALW\, 91.7 FM in San Francisco.
